Sweet Grass Arts Theater History
The Sweet Grass Arts Theater was purchased in 2018 by Sweet Grass Arts Alliance with the generosity of the local community and friends from afar.
In April 2018 the SGAA Board of Directors voted unanimously to purchase the building & business as the owner of a theater aligned perfectly with the SGAA mission to ‘Make the Arts Thrive.’ Fundraising over the next three months was a whirlwind of activity. Matching funds of $30,000 and $20,000 each were donated; individuals donated $1 to $5,000 and everything in between; an original painting of downtown Big Timber, by artist Thomas English, was raffled; space for names on the theater screen could be purchased; grant money came from the Community Foundation, and by July 30th the agreed sale price was reached.
The SGAA Board immediately began making a list of improvements: a stage for live performances; a retractable screen for more flexibility in the performance area; new, better, and much smaller speakers for films; microphones; stage lighting; and in the Lobby new windows, carpeting, paint, and lights. In 2019 the theater was closed for a month so the work could be accomplished more quickly. In mid-March, the final improvement for the initial phase of renovations was installed - a new lighted and digital Marquee.
We have completed our first year of ownership and have learned a lot about the movie business, concessions, use of the theater, how to set up for a live performance using the new sound and lights, and much more. A small room inside the back door is our new home for meetings and doubles as a green room for performers. Future improvements will include access and use of the upstairs room behind the screen, a new HVAC system, more insulation, and other things that will increase possible uses. We are very happy to be the new owners, and always welcome comments and ideas from the community that made this possible. Send messages to info@sweetgrassartsalliance.org
